Rug Hand-Wash Cleaning Process

Pre-Cleaning Evaluation – Before we start, we will fully evaluate the condition of your antique rug. This gives us the information we need in order to ensure it is handled with care and washed properly. Our staff will let you know if we recommend any repairs be made before we start cleaning, and we will also discuss fabric protection and insect and pest treatments before beginning. If the rug’s condition is bad enough that it wouldn’t survive a washing, we will let you know during this stage.
Dusting and Beating – To get out dirt, grime, and allergens, we’ll first use our dusting and beating process. We’ll carefully and gently remove all dust, dirt, and grime within the fibres of your rug.
Color Fastness Test – When loose dirt and grime are removed, we’ll perform a color-fastness test to ensure your rug can handle our cleaning process without the colors running. If your rug fails this test, we will use a different technique to wash it so that there won’t be any color lost during the washing process. We will also treat any frayed ends or damaged areas before washing so that they won’t become further damaged.
Immersion – When the rug is ready to be washed, we will place it in our immersion tub using an all-natural cleaning agent that will clean, remove dirt, grime, and oils, and protect the fibres of the rug. We gently agitate the rug during this process to ensure the specialized cleaning solution fully reaches each fibre.
Rinsing – After the rug has been fully cleaned, we rinse it gently and carefully in cold water to remove all particles, contaminants, soap, and residue. We may wash the rug several times to make sure it is fully clean.
Additional Fringe Cleaning or Correction – After rinsing is complete, we will evaluate the rug to see if it needs any additional spot cleaning, fringe cleaning, or correction. Drying – Once we are satisfied that the rug is completely clean and in its best condition, we will begin the drying process. We lay the rug out on a special screen in a climate-controlled, dehumidified environment and use special dryers to carefully and completely dry the rug. We make sure it is fully dried so that there will be no mold or mildew growth.
Application of Fabric Protection – If you choose to have added fabric protection, we will add it when the rug is fully dried. This includes Scotchgard Fabric Protector and insect repellent sprays.
Roll & Secure – Once the rug is dry, we carefully roll it up to preserve it for transportation. We may cover it in a breathable fabric to protect it from dust during transport. You can then come pick up your rug and take it home or put it in storage.
Customer Pick-up or Delivery
Once your rug has been completely washed, dried, protected, and rolled for transport, we will call you and let you know that it’s ready to be picked up. If you would prefer, we can schedule a time to deliver your rug to you. If you plan on storing your rug in a climate-controlled storage area after cleaning is completed, please let us know and we’ll wrap the rug with a breathable fabric to protect it while it’s stored. We also recommend that you allow us to treat your rug with insect and pest repellent prior to storage.
